Referencing Land &amp; History, the title gestures toward open-ended mythologies: fluid, layered, obscured and seemingly always open to reinterpretation.

From 2020-2024 they ran an exhibition space at Hafenplatz in Offenbach am Main, Germany, with an experimental and collaborative approach, hosting exhibitions, installations, and projects that often explore themes of spatiality, narrative, and materiality. In German there is a quip that means something along the lines of making lofty plans, believing in or hoping for improbable situations and outcomes, or simply: having delusional aspirations. Luftschloss, more commonly its plural form Luftschlösser and its rarer lexical sibling Wolkenschloss expresses a contradictory object. Some of the German words’ poetic quality may be lost in this translation, but the bottom line meaning is preserved. In a different, perhaps more literal sense, it is a fortified structure that dissolves into thin air as we try to imagine it. We know the sublime picture of towering thunderstorm clouds or the complete confusion of scale that occurs when we gaze down from inside an airplane, onto a landscape of clouds. Particularly when we descend on- and finally into said landscape, an upheaval of spatial orientation and tactile imagination occurs. The clouds appear as opaque objects, the ice crystals on the surface glisten in the intense sun and it appears possible to study the volumes and surfaces as we approach. However, upon trying to fixate on a single aspect, the clouds begin to bulge and pulsate, growing and collapsing onto themselves. Either because they actually are, or as the result of a visual effect created by the blinding sunlight reflected back into our eyes and the rapid movement of the machine. Still, as we draw closer, the peaks and ridges present as a solid totality, grow to terrifying dimensions, giving way to fantasies of the machine bending and breaking upon collision. But, as we dive in, the opaque material suddenly turns into a streaky white milk that we glide into with ease. This tumultuous sequence of sensory input, affects and ideas gives way to a kind of feeling of deceit: What we imagined to be a plethora of different things, different scenarios that played out in front of our mind's eye, at once loses all its substance and is therefore reduced to a mere trick, a delusion. Luftschlösser then can be understood as a futile but somewhat rebellious act of the imaginative faculties to withstand the intrusion of an anticlimactic real. For a period of time, judgement is suspended and traded in for a kind of real fantasy. The work exhibited in this exhibition may be considered a play on this theme: ‘Shows’ alludes to the immaterial work that lies at the bottom of making an exhibition. The works in an art show hold a material reality as well as manifold imaginaries - concrete objects that open up a field of connotations and subliminal messages. In the context of making an exhibition, both the material and the imaginary quality of the works have to be considered equally in order to create a larger context and set in motion a kind of play or conversation among them. Every show thus presents an interstitial proposed set of relations and aggregations. The overall gesture or gestalt is an elaborate fantasy, an effort to build a Luftschloss. ‘Shows’ presents a material translation of this process. As an homage to the collective work of Magma Maria; and its collaborators, it seeks out the impossible endeavor of making the refigurations and considerations visible, which all works are subject to in the process of curation. Rendered down to cardboard maquettes, devoid of the concrete and unique sensory qualities, different ways of thinking about works in the context of a show arise: Something clearly shows, but the singular content of the works is annulled. Instead, emphasis is shifted onto the conditions of showing anything in the first place. Being reduced to a single material, the objects merge into one another, becoming at once identical and still retaining different degrees of recognisability. Art here becomes a kind of raw material, of which the final presentation is crafted. Still, in the reverse-engineering of re-staging and re-producing four past years of shows, lies another set of sentiments: The labour that involves actively remembering and reviewing past shows engages a particular sense of the nostalgic. ‘Shows’ celebrates the past and its closure. Whereas the rendering of all works into a sprawling, somewhat dull amassment of cardboard borders on the comical, centering the reversal of immaterial labour into a superfluous excess of physical work, the apparent futility and the joy of engaging again with the body of work that collectively made up Magma Maria, expresses a deep nostalgia and gratitude for the manifold ways in which making up and reflecting on shows have come to be realised. Not unlike another disorienting experience the airplane passenger makes, when the boundary between habitable atmosphere and dead space seems to simultaneously produce itself and be undone on the horizon, in ‘Shows’, the ambiguous and unseen of making exhibitions comes into light and claims a place among the artwork, creating e benign aesthetic shock and calling forth different ways of engagement. As the title of the exhibition suggests, we are thankful beyond words for the past years. Frej Volander, Theodor Nymark and Christine DahlerupWith Land &amp; History, we present the first install ment of acuratorial exchange between the two artist-driven exhibition platforms MagmaMaria (DE) and Salon 75 (DK). For the first part of the exchange, the Copenhagen-based collective Salon75 has been invited to Offenbach to curate and realize an exhibition at the current Magma Maria exhibition space. For the second iteration, Magma Maria will inturn travel to Copenhagen and assemble an exhibition at Salon 75 next spring. The&nbsp;initial exhibition Land &amp; History by Salon 75 at Magma Maria is comprised of new work by artists Hedvig Greiffenberg, Christine Dahlerup, Frej Volander, Sofus Keiding-Agger, and TheodorNymark. The presentation of works relate to the poetics and politics of land, a concept both ephemeral and concretely transformative. The exhibition was accompanied by a reader with excerpts from various texts. assuming I explain to someone that this is a model of an exhibition, and they say, but why, there‘s something hanging on the wall, a picture, that‘s something.”¹ – Michael Krebber How do you issue an invitation? Perhaps the best way is to be direct. For four years we have been organizing this exhibition space, the great void, which always presents itself to the public like a doll‘s house and is constantly being refilled with new content. In our history, the T B H exhibition can be read as an open question that approaches staking out processes: What does it mean to fill a space? From the artists‘ point of view, one could ask what it means to engage in an exhibition. Along the walls of this exhibition you will find the artists‘ answers to the invitation we sent out to exhibit in our space. We have divided the space into smaller units, scaled them down and multiplied them. The result is a show of dioramas whose aspect ratios quote our space and which can be found along the walls. Not quite solo exhibitions, not quite miniatures, these new productions negotiate frameworks that are familiar to the artists within the exhibition parameters, namely having to position and contextualize their works within architectural conditions. On the other hand, these dimensions entail completely new shifts for all those involved when talking about the relationship between art and framing. As you move through the room, past the rooms so to speak, you are drawn into new worlds from work to work. These are mental journeys through continuums, some of which are positioned like self-contained units and some of which open up in such a way that they suggest endless extensions. These variations mediate content, maintain it or produce it anew. They tell of impossibilities and possibilities that could be realized in a 1:1 conversion if resources were not a factor, but also do not necessarily need to exist in this dimension as to be considered a finished concept. Above all, and this is what unites the works beyond the framework of the model, they tell their own story when you gaze into these display showcases. Vielleicht am besten ganz direkt. Seit vier Jahren organisieren wir diesen Ausstellungsort, die große Leere, der sich stets der Öffentlichkeit wie ein Puppenhaus präsentiert und sich immer wieder mit neuen Inhalten füllt. In unserer Historie kann man die Ausstellung T B H als eine offene Frage lesen, die sich Absteckungsprozessen nähert: Was bedeutet es, einen Raum zu füllen? Aus dem Blick der Künstler*innen könnte man fragen, was es bedeutet, sich auf eine Ausstellung einzulassen. Durchgetaktet an den Wänden entlang, finden Sie in dieser Ausstellung die Antworten der Künstler*innen auf die Einladung, die wir ausgesendet haben, in unserem Raum auszustellen. Der Raum wurde von uns in Sinneinheiten unterteilt, verkleinert und vervielfacht. So ergibt sich eine Schau von Dioramen, deren Seitenverhältnisse unseren Raum zitieren und die entlang den Wänden zu finden sind. Nicht ganz Solo-Ausstellung, nicht ganz Miniatur, verhandeln diese Neuproduktionen Rahmenbedingungen, die den Künstler*innen innerhalb der Ausstellungsparameter vertraut sind, nämlich ihre Werke innerhalb architektonischer Gegebenheiten zu positionieren und kontextualisieren zu müssen. Andererseits bringen diese Dimensionen für alle Beteiligten ganz neue Verschiebungen mit sich, wenn man über das Verhältnis von Kunst und Rahmung redet. Bewegt man sich durch den Raum, an den Räumen vorbei, wird man von Arbeit zu Arbeit in neue Welten gezogen. Es sind gedankliche Fahrten durch Kontinuen, die sich teils wie abgeschlossene Einheiten positionieren und sich teils so öffnen, dass sie endlose Erweiterungen suggerieren. Diese Variationen verhandeln Inhalt, bewahren ihn oder produzieren ihn ganz neu. Sie erzählen von Unmöglichkeiten und Möglichkeiten, die in einer 1:1-Umsetzung realisierbar wären, wenn Ressourcen keine Rolle spielen würden, aber es auch nicht zwingendermaßen wollen, um als fertiges Konzept zu existieren. Vor allen Dingen, und das eint die Arbeiten abseits der Rahmenbedingung des Modells, erzählen sie aber ganz selbstbewusst aus sich heraus, wenn man in diese Schaukästen guckt. Simplified, it depicts the architectural characteristics as well as the positioning in space. In addition, it allows initial conclusions to be drawn about possible cross-connections between the objects within it. The resulting overview can usually be transferred to three-dimensional space without any major complications. „Floor Plan“ approaches this space from a different perspective and turns the idea of the reference system constructed overhead into its principle. The works of the five invited artists are positioned along the paths of the exposed pipes and almost organic cable ducts. They cling to them, strive upwards or peer down from above in a constant attempt to defy gravity. Curated by Malte Möller and Lena Stewens Photos by Jakob Otter EN Considering the ceiling as a reference system, orientating oneself along the pipes, cable ducts and cross-bracing that run across its surface and locating works within these coordinates inevitably evokes a shift in one's viewing habits. Hence, the head must be tilted back and the torso leaned slightly rearwards in order to recognise how the works gradually merge with the architectural conditions. The construction of the building is largely supported by solid concrete pillars which are anchored in its structure. Although they do not fulfil a decorative function, they are fundamental for stability. It would appear that Daewoong Kim's "die Säule" is also trying to serve such a purpose. The work depicts a pencil and charcoal drawing of an ancient column that stretches across several stacked cardboard boxes up to the ceiling. Kim based it on one of the columns of the "Gate of All Nations", which was located in the ancient Persian residential city of Persepolis. Nevertheless, the city was destroyed by Alexander the Great in 330 BC. Since then, the column has remained free-standing, without a physical load-bearing function, but with a historical one. The column of empty cardboard boxes however, cannot withstand the actual weight of the ceiling, which is why it harbours the ever-present potential for collapse. Another work that deals with questions of stability and architecture can be found in Swinda Oelke's "Ruheposition". A sort of video pendulum causes the room to oscillate repetitively, creating ambiguous doublings due to the visual overlapping of the projection and the ceiling structure. An almost invisible tension arises, which in particular raises questions about one's own spatial localisation. The play with distance and the allure of almost touching can also be found in Celia Zehetgruber's "solo, tutti" and its installation. Two screens are mounted at a dizzying height and allow a glimpse at the two-channel video. In a never-ending loop, a pole dancer climbs up the rod, performs a pose, slides down the pole and starts all over again. Each shot impressively shows how the dancer is in constant control of her body tension, which at the same time is projected into the emptiness of the physical and metaphorical space in between – from gazing to discretion, intimacy to exposure, endurance to resistance. In her work "LUCK LOVE LUST LOSE", Nina Nadig also allows deliberately charged gaps to emerge. A large game board made of lorry tarpaulins stretches across the ceiling. Reminiscent of backgammon, a two-player game based on luck (the throwing of the dice) and strategy (the movement of the stones on the board). Like almost every (board) game, it creates a constant tension, round after round, through the omnipresent desire to win and the equally high potential to lose. Through the powerfully tense installation, Nadig transfers all this tension back into the space. The promise of a gain plays a key role in Alex Gdanietz's "Aktion" as well. In his ongoing exploration of social spaces, architecture and the accompanying societal habitus, Gdanietz became aware of promotional signs used in discount stores. On the one hand, they serve as an orientation aid to help with the localisation in and between the aisles. On the other hand, they are meant to encourage a targeted movement towards supposed bargains. However, the objects, which at first glance appear to be readymades, are deprived of this commercial purpose. Although "Aktion" hovers above the viewers' heads, within the context of the exhibition it rather refers to one's own self as well as to the obvious void. About (in)stability, localisation and the potential of the space in between – "Floor Plan" brings together works that not only turn the architecture of the exhibition space upside down and evoke an almost childlike sense of wonder, but also enable a different perspective on everyday moments, infrastructure and social interaction. Text by Vivien Kämpf DEDie Decke als Bezugssystem zu verstehen, sich entlang der an ihr verlaufenden Rohre, Kabelkanäle wie Querverstrebungen zu orientieren und innerhalb dieser Koordinaten Werke zu verorten, evoziert unweigerlich einen Bruch mit bestehenden Sehgewohnheiten. So muss der Kopf in den Nacken gelegt und der Oberkörper etwas nach hinten gelehnt werden, um zu erkennen, wie die Arbeiten in der Höhe nach und nach mit den architektonischen Gegebenheiten verwachsen. Die Konstruktion des Gebäudes stützt sich maßgeblich auf die im Bauwerk verankerten, massiven Betonpfeiler. Sie erfüllen zwar keine dekorative Funktion, dennoch sind sie elementar für die Stabilität. Im ersten Moment scheint Daewoong Kims “die Säule” ebenfalls einen solchen Zweck erfüllen zu wollen. Die Arbeit zeigt eine mit Bleistift und Kohle angefertigte Zeichnung einer antiken Säule, die sich über mehrere übereinander gestapelte Kartons bis unter die Decke erstreckt. Kim orientierte sich dafür an einer der antiken Säulen des “Tores aller Länder”, das sich in der altpersischen Residenzstadt Persepolis befand. Im Jahr 330 v. Chr. wurde die Palaststadt jedoch durch Alexander den Großen zerstört. Seit jeher steht die Säule frei, zwar ohne tragende Funktion für eine physische Last, jedoch für eine historische. Dem eigentlichen Gewicht der Decke kann “die Säule” aus leeren Kartons jedoch nicht Stand halten, weswegen in ihr das Potenzial des Einsturzes allgegenwärtig wird. Eine weitere Arbeit, die sich mit Fragen der Stabilität und Architektur auseinandersetzt, findet sich in Swinda Oelkes “Ruheposition“. Eine Art Video-Pendel versetzt den Raum repetitiv in Schwingung und lässt durch die visuelle Überlappung von Projektion und Deckenstruktur mehrdeutige Dopplungen entstehen. Auf diese Weise wird eine nahezu unsichtbare Spannung erzeugt, welche insbesondere Fragen nach der eigenen räumlichen Verortung aufwirft. Das Spiel mit Distanz und der Reiz des Fast-Berührens lassen sich ebenfalls in Celia Zehetgrubers “solo, tutti” sowie in dessen Installation wiederfinden. Die Bildschirme in schwindelerregender Höhe befestigt und erlauben einen Blick auf das Zwei-Kanal-Video. In einem nie enden wollenden Loop klettert eine Poledancerin die Stange hinauf, vollführt eine Pose, gleitet an der Stange herab und beginnt wieder von vorne. Die unterschiedlichen Aufnahmen zeigen eindrücklich, wie die Tänzerin stets ihre Körperspannung kontrolliert, gleichzeitig wird diese in die Leere des physischen wie metaphorischen Zwischenraums – zwischen Blicken und Diskretion, Intimität und Entblößung, Aushalten und Widerstehen – projiziert. Auch Nina Nadig lässt in ihrer Arbeit “LUCK LOVE LUST LOSE” bewusst aufgeladene Lücken entstehen. Großflächig erstreckt sich ein Spielbrett aus LKW-Planen über die Decke. Es erinnert an Backgammon, ein Zwei-Personen-Spiel, das auf Glück (dem Würfeln) und Strategie (der Bewegung der Steine auf dem Spielbrett) basiert. So wie nahezu jedes (Brett-)Spiel erzeugt es Runde für Runde aufs Neue eine Grundspannung, durch den allgegenwärtigen Wunsch zu gewinnen und das ebenso hohe Potenzial zu verlieren. Durch die kraftvoll gespannte Installation überführt Nadig diese zurück in den Raum. Der verheißungsvolle Gewinn spielt auch in Alex Gdanietz’ “Aktion” eine zentrale Rolle. In seiner aktiven Auseinandersetzung mit sozialen Räumen, Architekturen und dem daran geknüpften gesellschaftlichen Habitus wurde Gdanietz auf Aktionsschilder aufmerksam, die in Discountern verwendet werden. Zum Einen dienen sie als Orientierungshilfe für die Verortung in und zwischen den Gängen. Zum Anderen soll eine zielgerichtete Bewegung zu den vermeintlichen Schnäppchen erreicht werden. Diesem kommerziellen Zweck werden die Objektkörper, die auf den ersten Blick wie Readymades anmuten, jedoch beraubt. So schwebt “Aktion” zwar über den Köpfen der Betrachtenden, verweist im Kontext der Ausstellung hingegen auf das eigene Selbst sowie auf die offensichtliche Lücke. Von (In-)Stabilität, Verortung und dem Potenzial des Zwischenraums – “Floor Plan” versammelt Werke, die nicht nur die Architektur des Ausstellungsraums auf den Kopf stellen sowie ein nahezu kindliches Staunen evozieren, sondern auch eine veränderte Perspektive auf Alltagsmomente, Infrastruktur und ein soziales Miteinander ermöglichen. both France and Germany. First initiated with the aim to create space for friendships, uniting researches and associations. We are happy to share and enhance these experiences with you on this occasion. In its development and throughout the diverse exchanges we had, the exhibition has further evolved to explore the intricate and multiple relationships between the internal and the external, displaying what is revealed and what is concealed. It can be interpreted as a reflection on the poetic interplays between inscriptions, signs and fictions, which cohabit with us in our shared, public, and domestic spaces. Rosa, Anna Stüdeli, Akinori Tao Structured by the idea of 'tour' - a journey for business or pleasure - the tourism industry has grown massively in the last century, sustained by a well-spread logic of commodification of pleasure. As free time slowly turned into a product, products such as resorts started to emerge. Offering anything from unlimited food, drinks and activities ranging from scuba diving to sex or safaris for a fixed price, preferably somewhere sunny, these spaces stand as all-inclusive, autonomous islands, the ultimate product of the leisure industry. And yet, like with any other industry, this comes at a cost. As an economic activity based on using material resources in order to fulfill immaterial needs, tourism is to a certain degree a phenomenon of evaporation, a big stream vanishing in space as water leaves (or overfills) the ground. Thus a couple of questions may be asked. For instance, to what extent is tourism following the same principles of overproduction of other industries? Are ecosystems absorbed as a sub-product, an exquisite version of experience? Should this hyper-version of experience be seen as a reflection of the promise of a hyper-version of oneself? Focusing on the threshold of leisure andconsumption, the aim of "RESORT" is to capture and mirror the tension between these issues in space.The exhibition thus works as a form of material survey, presenting a multitude of artistic positions navigating the relation between waste and desire.
